Summary

On this page we'll show you a quick summary of our full review of the Intel 3.46 Extreme Edition processor utilizing a new 1066 MHz FSB.  If you would like the whole story, including all the benchmarks and technical details, I encourage you to read the full article instead.  Otherwise, continue on to get the quick and dirty of Intel's latest offering.

Today's announcement from Intel of their new 3.46EE processor actually brings about a couple new pieces of technology for PC enthusiasts.  First, the Intel 3.46EE uses a new 1066 MHz front-side bus (266 MHz x 4) that increases memory speed on the DDR2 platform.  Along with it, Intel has released the Intel 925XE chipset that is needed for official support for the 1066 MHz FSB.

Intel's 3.46 Extreme Edition Processor

The real story is in how the new FSB improves performance for this Intel processor over the previous models as well as the AMD competition.

The Intel 3.46EE does see a gain over the Intel line up, for gaming the Athlon 64 processors are still the best you can get.

The 3.46EE makes a big step towards catching the AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 processor and both are comparable for speed on this test.

The Sysmark tests have always favored Intel's processors and platforms, and this time the 3.46EE is able to utilize that to get the highest score we have seen on this standard PC usage test.

Curious about the pricing on this new Intel flagship CPU?  If you are, it's scheduled to be available for $999.  Yep, a grand.  This will no doubt put it out of the price range of most enthusiasts, but for those with money to burn...  Intel still has some catching up to do with AMD as far as gaming performance goes, but it will be sometime I think before this happens.
