What is the PC Perspective HW Leaderboard? The PC Perspective Hardware Leaderboard is going to become the first place you look to find the components that will make up your next computer. On this page you will find our editor's combined opinions on the best systems you can build based on three different budgets. You can expand each of the systems (High End, Mid-Range and Budget) to show you all the components that we believe represent the best products in their price ranges.
Why a Leaderboard? We like the idea of a Leaderboard because it presents a no non-sense way of looking at the best hardware available. On this page, you won't find paragraph after paragraph telling you why this processor is better than that processor. Instead you'll find the quick and dirty on our editor's choices for the best hardware you can get. No beating around the bush here. Of course, if you still want to get our full and detailed opinions on various hardware, you can look through our reviews page. But the HW Leaderboard is going to give you our final decisions in one quick look.

Along with the PCPer HWLB its self, you can also head to
the PCPer Hardware Leaderboard forum! This forum is where you can discuss my selections and offer your own suggestions. It is also the place for you to talk about the new system build you are working on even if it's NOT based on anything here.
Our Dream System has kept the same processor and motherboard combination for quite a while and as you can't find a faster processor on the market right now, the i7-975 stays. The MSI Eclipse Pro still stays, it won a Gold Award thanks to its long list of features and serious overclocking potential. The pair of GeForce GTX 295 from BFG are gone now that AMD's Evergreen has arrived. Three HD 5870s in triple Crossfire has been replaced by a pair of HD 5970s taking you from 3 GPUs to 4 and adding an extra gigabyte of RAM too boot. DX11 support and a chance to play with three LCDs does have a rather high entrance fee. The Intel X25-M 80GB solid state drives continue to have supply problems but thankfully the price is starting to stabilize around the MSRP. It will take a little searching on your own to find the best deal of the day from a dealer that has them in stock. It may even pay to visit brick and mortar stores as well. You will need a large storage drive but make sure you pay less than $90/TB. Previously I recommended overclocking 12GB of DDR3-1800 as it was about half the price of 6GB of DDR3-2000 but that is no longer the case.
Time to try out DDR3-2000!
The High End System has moved to new technology as well except for the Eclipse SLI motherboard. The almost extinct Core i7 940 has been replaced by the much more common Core i7 950 and offers a small speed boost as well. Just as with the Dream System, the HD 5870 powers the graphic subsytem allowing you to enjoy all the same benefits, if not the full horsepower. Lastly the RAM has switched to 6GBs from 3GBs as the price of DDR3 continues to fluctuate.
Our Mid-Range System recommendation has undergone some changes with the advent of Lynnfield, which moves the PCIe controller onto the chip allowing for a significant savings on the motherboard. Don't think that means that the motherboard lacks features, the MSI P55-GD65 still sports solid capacitors, 7 SATA and an eSATA plus MSI's DrMOS. If you are planning on using more than two video cards, then an LGA1366 board and processor might make more sense, but at that point you are really building a high end PC and should plan accordingly. The move to a P55 board also necessitates a change in DDR3 choice, in this case OCZ provides 4GB of dual channel Platinum Edition PC3-10666. The biggest change to the system also gives it a jump in performance, the HD 5770 gives a drop in price along with the exact same benefits as the HD 5870.
Finally, the Budget Leaderboard now sports a Quad core processor thanks to the release of the Athlon II series from AMD. An Athlon II X4 640 appears to power a budget PC that should handle just about anything you want to try. Josh's favourite value AM3 board, the Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P stays, the 785G chipset is great if you are not planning on buying a discrete graphics card and you won't be as even the Budget System takes advantage of AMDs newest GPU. This month it is the HD5750 in the Budget Rig, perfect for surfing or an HTPC and even some light gaming! You might not expect to find Corsair's XMS3 Xtreme Performance RAM in the budget system, but thanks to a great deal that is being offered, 2GB of high end DD3 brings snappy response to a PC that costs less than $600.
That's it for this month readers! Don't forget to drop by the Hardware Leaderboard forum to share your comments!

Intel Core i7-950 3.06 GHz Processor |
$555 |

The Intel Core i7 series of processors is the favourite of anyone looking for serious performance. The i7-940 has been displaced by the newer i7 950 as the older chip has become rather difficult to locate. That is not a bad by any stretch of the imagination, for the same price you end up with a faster CPU. You still have support for triple channel DDR3 and the processor can support as many GPUs as you can fit in the system giving you the chance for a simple upgrade by dropping in a new card.

GigaByte GA-EX58-EXTREME |
$337 |
 |
Gigabyte has a chance to provide the backbone of the High End PC with their flagship GigaByte GA-EX58-EXTREME. A rather attractive blue and while board with a huge heatpipe covering all of the major heat producing capacitors as well as the chipset its self that also sports barbs to allow you to attach the heatpipes into a watercooling loop. Optional Silent-Pipe PCI cooling can also be added if you have a free PCI slot to help move even more heat, a feature that comes in handy if you utilize the overclocking ability that this board displayed in Steve's full review.
You do loose out on the ability to build a quad GPU system, but if that is your plan you should be checking out the Dream System!

XFX Radeon HD 5870 |
$380 |
 |
This is a very expensive update to the High End machine, the extra $150 noticeable even with the high price of X58 boards right now but it is a card worth every penny. The 58xx series is much more than just a simple speed upgrade, it is a DX11 card that sucks less power and creates less heat than other high end cards and you get support for EyeFinity and never before seen CrossFire scaling (unfortunately not at the same time right now). A GTX 275 will still have you gaming in style at about $100 less, but you won't be seeing some of the newer features.
Not convinced? Read Ryan's full review of the HD 5870 as well as his article on EyeFinity before you make up your mind.

The previous discount on the 3GB kit of OCZ DDR3 has ended, bring the price up to $100. It seems only intelligent to spend an extra $14 and double the amount of RAM your system will have available. There is only a week remaining until the launch of Windows 7, so please make sure to pick the 64bit version. CL 9-9-9-24

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB |
$229 |

Finally an update to our storage configuration! We have been singing
praises about the WD VelociRaptor since we first got our hands on it
and now that they are available they are the obvious choice for a top
end gaming system. I'd still recommend a secondary
data drive (or two in RAID 1) though. Something like the 1.0 TB WD Caviar would do nicely.
$200 for 300GB, not too bad a few months ago and hard to beat as of today. SSDs are coming down in price, expect to see them in the High End system soon.

We have been dominated by Creative Labs sound cards
for years, but we finally think we have another option for high-end
systems in the form of the Asus Xonar D2. Based on a custom chip and
utilizing technologies from Dolby and others, this sound card offers quite a unique take on audio and sits in that unused 1x PCI-E slot!

Corsair TX850 |

Corsair's TX850 was reviewed by Lee back in the Spring and it is time that it made an appearance on the Hardware Leaderboard. Like all of Corsair's PSUs, this 850W unit is covered by a 5 year warranty that will ensure you get to enjoy this PSU until we start seeing 1kW units in the budget system. As Lee prefers, this PSU delivers up to 70A on a single +12V output, it doesn't try to split up a single rail into multiples which should offer you more stability as your GPU and other components try to suck as much power as they can. Your pocket book will be glad to hear that this is an 80+ rated unit, offering good power efficiency, which starts to become very important as you hit the higher wattage PSUs.
