As the more astute of you know, PC Perspective is going to be a part of Quakecon this year. Judging case mod contests is just a part of it, as is figuring a way to rig the contest so that one of our members can drive home in the new Shelby GT. There will also be a both with tons of t-shirts and prizes to be won. Enough prizes that Ryan has had to resort to extreme measures to get them all there.

MESQUITE, TX - July 22, 2009 - Ventrilo, the premier group voice communications program used in tournaments and multiplayer games, is ready to blow the doors off of QuakeCon 2009 with the sponsorship of its second annual "QuakeCon Ultimate Power Up" Sweepstakes. One extremely lucky attendee will rocket away from QuakeCon 2009 in a brand new supercharged 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Coupe, valued at approximately $52,000. The 14th annual QuakeCon will be held at the Gaylord Texan in Dallas from August 13 - 16 2009 and is open to the public and free to all attendees. "One look under the hood of this 2010 Shelby and you'll start strategizing on how to get your hands on this powerhouse street machine," said Brian Knapp, president, Flagship Industries. "Ford and Shelby are both iconic American names that represent a long history of street legal horsepower, and it's a thrill to be giving one away to the lucky winner of the Ventrilo Ultimate Power Up competition. As always it's an honor to be working with our friends at id Software and giving back to the gaming community." "This is the most powerful production Mustang ever made and thanks to Ventrilo, someone from QuakeCon will walk away with the keys to this beast of a machine," said Todd Hollenshead, president, id Software. "QuakeCon 2009 will be a can't miss event for LAN fiends, game fans or id Software devotees; and Ventrilo giving away this bad ass muscle car is an example of why everyone needs to make sure that they have August 13 to 16 on their calendar for the world's best video game party." The 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Coupe to be given away will be Kona blue and comes with a six speed transmission mated to a supercharged 5.4 liter V-8 pumping out a brutal 540 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of pavement destroying torque. The car will be on display throughout QuakeCon in the main exhibition area. A total of 100 tickets for the Shelby Mustang GT500 drawing will be awarded to QuakeCon attendees for everything from performance in the QuakeCon Pro, Open and Quick Draw Tournaments, to participation in other QuakeCon contests, events and random drawings. The winner will be randomly selected at 9 p.m. (Central Standard Time) on Saturday, August 15, as part of the tournament finals event on the QuakeCon Main Stage.

The Tech Report have been posting Computex updates like mad and still are having a hard time keeping up due to the huge volume of information from this years expo. Lynnfield processors and the P55 boards they will run on were showing next to nVIDIA's Tegra processor and Ion platform. Various PSU makers were showing off their 80+ lineups, including this very impressive beast. There were some interesting new tricks with notebooks and the motherboard makers were showing off too.
There is a lot more to see there but don't tire your eyes out as Ryan has a newly minted article on his travels at Computex as well. "We have even more Computex news and photo galleries from the latter part of the show. Join us for the latest official and unofficial news about Intel's next quad-core processors, Tegra and Ion systems from Nvidia, ultra- efficient power supplies from Seasonic and Enermax, next-gen netbook touchpads, AMD processor core unlocking from Gigabyte, and much more." The four PC gaming stars of E3 in Futurelooks opinon are a pair of sequels and a pair of new games. The sequels are to Modern Warfare and Bioshock, both games were very well received by fans of their respective genres, Bioshock more for the story and interesting use of Plasmids, CoD: Modern Warfare for its more realistic take on combat. The two new games are very different, one covers the exploits of a famous Navy SEAL; the other is a designed as a multiplayer crime spree, with up to 1500 people per server.
"Although E3 2009 was all about console games for the Microsoft Xbox 360, SONY Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii, there were a few select titles for the hardcore PC gamers out there. Here are four select titles that should make PC Gamers very happy once they hit the shelves. They include Bioshock 2, CrimeCraft, Rogue Warrior and Modern Warfare 2." DigiTimes saw a lot of vendors as they toured Computex this year, but the main thing they noticed was the focus on portability. Most of the first part of their look at this trade show is taken up
by mobility products along with some interesting entertainment devices from MSI. The second part features the huge V10 cooler from CoolerMaster and even more mobility products. The digital picture frame with built in scanner is definitely worth a second look.
"With ultra-thin notebooks and netbooks taking up most of the spotlight at Computex Taipei 2009, several Taiwan IT players have added innovations to their products to show their unique R&D abilities, while some IT players are showcasing their latest ideas on how consumer electronics "make life more simple".

Ryan isn't the only one running back and forth between Nangang and the Taipei 101 tower, though he did post two new videos for you to check out.
For instance, The Tech Report has been madly banging out previews of everything they saw. Intel showed them Lynfield, Clarksfield and Nehalem chips, as well as a Pine Trail platform with an Atom and integrated graphics. Corsair's incredible Obsidian case caught their eye and both ASUS and AMD had some eye grabbing graphics displays. This is the stuff we won't see up for review for a little while; the more chances you get to peek at it, the more you can infer early. Here are some more Shows and Expos articles from around the web:

At first glance, more news about tessellation in games raises very little interest; we have been hearing that it is just around the corner for almost a decade now. A second look reveals that not only are they right this time, but AMD has the fully DX11 compliant 40nm silicon to prove it. Sure the current generation of GPUs from AMD can do tessellation in benchmarks, but no games support the technology. With DX11 we will finally see the arrival of tessellation as well as some other interesting improvements. You can find pictures and slides of the presentation as well as Ryan's thoughts on the matter here.
"AMD certainly has set a aggressive pace, and so far we have not seen any information from NVIDIA that they have a working DX11 part in house (all rumors point to them NOT having any working silicon at this time). If TSMC can fix its 40nm issues, and AMD can ramp these parts in a timely manner, then it is not unreasonable to expect actual product to be available for the October launch of Windows 7." "C is for CUDA, that's good enough for thee!"
nVIDIA's chief has decided that the CPU isn't entirely useless, as he had some praise to offer Intel. Apparently the Atom processor impressed him as he proclaimed that both "a CPU and GPU co-processing architecture" are necessary. As The Inquirer points out, it is a little strange that he neglected to talk about Ion. There are success stories he could have told, even if the North American market has not seen them. There were also some glasses, which Ryan hated more than the Inq did. "NVIDIA AND INTEL may have been at loggerheads for a while, but Jen-Hsun seemed eager to diffuse some of the hostile atmosphere that has soured the air between the two, declaring that PCs really needed both "a CPU and GPU co- processing architecture," whilst also praising Intel's little Atom brat as a "wonderful achievement." The graphics firm spent 90 minutes showing a pre-Computex gathering already-seen demos, talking Cuda, failing to mention much about Ion (despite 20 design "wins") and giving us all a laugh with some god-awful paper 3D glasses." Computex has barely gotten underway for those who flew all the way to Beijing and E3 starts tomorrow in Los Angeles, making this a bad time to be a hardware or software reviewer, but a great time to be an enthusiast. Ryan is on point at Computex, with frequent updates going up to the front page. However as it is midnight there, it is worth taking a break from Computex to see what Ars Technica has in the way of a preview of E3. EA and Activision are the two big players, with a long list of soon to be released games on show, with more to be announced as the show kicks off.
"While E3 may not officially begin until Tuesday this week, the action has already begun. Trailers of big-name games are being released or leaked, the PSP Go has been a hot topic of conversation, and of course Microsoft will try to begin the whole mess tomorrow with a bang, as the company hosts the show's first press conference. What do we expect from E3 this year?" Here are some more Shows and Expos articles from around the web:

Wyoming is known for many things, but rarely for things like LAN parties. This upcoming weekend the UW PC Gamers club is having a 3 day LAN extravaganza. So those wishing to participate can show up at the Laramie Ice Arena, pay your $10, and have a place to game to your heart's content.
They have gathered a few sponsors, and will be giving away some prizes. PCPer has donated a XFX NVIDIA based motherboard for the event, and the group has also picked up other sponsors such as Mushkin. Left 4 Dead seems to be the reigning game for LAN parties, with a helping of Counter Strike: Source, and perhaps some TF2 to cleanse the palate. Try to resist logging into World of Warcraft, as it is considered tacky at most LAN parties.
Personally I will probably be attending, and hopefully not make a total fool out of myself while playing these games. Hell, might even put on an impromptu discussion about current and future graphics architectures and where it looks like we will be going. There are 150 seats in total, and at an impromptu LAN last month they had 75 folks show up. So, get there early and claim your spot!

CES 2009 may technically be over, but the sneak peeks and highlights from the show are still coming. Legit Reviews has just posted a compilation of what they thought were the best displays from names you may not be familiar with. You won't see Corsair or nVIDIA, instead you will see iMini Pets, Real-View 3D and Anybots. Don't miss out.
"CES 2009 always has the latest and upcoming technology from any industry. We thought it would be nice for our readers to see a few products that normally are not featured on LR, so we ran around the show floor and found a few products to tell you about. Read on to see how you like these products from Real-View, iRobot, Ozaki, and Anybots!" Here are some more Shows and Expos articles from around the web:

The MSI table had a lot to show off at the recent CES. There were two new lines of laptops, the X-Slim series, which bears a strong resemblance to the Macbook Air. Thanks to the 8 cell battery, you can expect up to 10 hours of run time before you run out of juice. The G series is the polar opposite, weight and battery life are sacrificed in order to make these notebooks attractive to gamers. Breaking 10,000 in 3DMark06 isn't top shabby for a notebook. Think Computers also saw some desktop systems from MSI as well.
"MSI had one of the most exciting booths this year at CES, probably because they were just showing off their notebooks. MSI is not a new comer to the notebook market, but are not as well knows as others, but after you see what they showed at CES they will definitely be on your radar. Let's take a look and see what they have in store for us." Here are some more Shows and Expos articles from around the web:

Reporting 'live, as it happens', especially at an electronics trade show, does have some drawbacks. You benefit from the feeling of being there and capturing the moment and get to see a lot of cool new kit for the first time without waiting for a full write up. That quickness does tend to make the reporting a little more shallow since there simply isn't time to full cover all the details. Ars Technica has revisited a lot of what they covered at CES in a more indepth fashion, which you can see here if you aren't already expo-ed out.
"CES may officially be over, but here at Ars we're still processing all of the news and interviews that came out of the show. Over the next week or so, we'll continue to write about what we saw, heard, and learned. But for now, let's pause and take a look back to wrap up some loose ends, recap the highlights, and prepare for the coming year in tech. In this short CES wrap-up, I'll go back and fill in the blanks on some of the hardware stories that I covered, and Gaming Editor Ben Kuchera will hit the highlights of the CES gaming news." If the videos that Ryan posted over the weekend still haven't satisfied your desire to see everything that was on display at CES 2009, follow the links below and you can pretty much be guaranteed to have caught as much coverage as is humanly possible. You can start off by taking a look at the current tablet for the OLPC project as captured by The Tech Report. It isn't a powerful gaming laptop by any means, it's a fairly simple Atom based tablet with a 60GB hard drive that only weighs 2.8lbs, perfect for a child who should be studying instead of fragging.
"Fresh from the show floor, we have a first look at the next-generation of Intel's Classmate PC, the chip giant's alternative to the OLPC for use in educational settings in developing nations. The new Classmate design is a convertible tablet with a touch-sensitive screen, stylus, and custom software (which runs on top of Windows XP) to enable touch-based input and control. Read on for the full scoop and photos." Here are some more Shows and Expos articles from around the web:

One of the biggest headaches for tech innovation right now has to be the economic downturn. Not just because their own jobs may be in danger but also because buying new luxury items really isn't at the top of most people lists. The gang at CES 2009 is soldiering on regardless, bringing all the newest toys, gadgets and tools to show off. Many displays are toned down compared to last year; but there is still a wide variety to see. Check out AnandTech's highlights here.
"Coming into this year’s CES, we knew things would be different. With many large companies having no presence on the show floor, and estimated attendance down, we expected a different feeling from the show. After attending press conferences from LG, Toshiba, Samsung, Panasonic, and Sony, we can certainly confirm our thoughts. With the world’s economy in recession, CE companies have had to change their marketing approach from those flashy, obscenely large screens that nobody could afford (remember all those “World’s Largest TV” claims?). ASUS definitely isn't sitting on its hands with this whole "Eee" branding thing. While we have in the past poked fun at the company's desire to put the Eee moniker on just about ANYTHING they could paint white, at CES yesterday ASUS showed off quite a few interesting new products in various stages of development. The most exciting was probably the Eee Keyboard PC - a fully functioning computer in a stylized keyboard that has an iPhone-sized touch pad on the right hand side where the number pad would usually be located. The back of the unit has connections like Ethernet, DVI/VGA output, USB and audio jacks. The PC includes a built-in speaker and microphone as well as a first: integrated wide-band wireless HDMI. Now if only we could get some displays that would use it!
Another interesting model featured two PCs in a single notebook chassis and where the touch pad would normally be was a 4.3" touch screen instead that was the display for the smaller, lower powered PC components. The benefit of this is that you can power the larger display with the lower power computer for longer battery life when doing simple things like watching movies. The hardware powering the "main" PC was a common Eee PC setup while the hardware behind the touch pad PC was a mystery - likely either a VIA or NVIDIA system-on-a-chip. ASUS also showed off general purpose touch screen Eee PCs as well as a touch screen, swivel display tablet-style unit (the Eee PC T91) as well. An iMac-look-alike PC was shown also dubbed the Eee Top and also includes a touch screen. I have a short video below that goes over all of the products with some groovy music in the background. Enjoy!

CES 2009 is in full swing, but instead of heading to the tech displays, the first thing Legit Reviews did was try out the massage chairs. Luckily, someone managed to pry them out of the chair and forced them to take some pictures. Corsair is showing off 64GB thumb drives and some really impressive triple channel kits. They played with the Novint Falcon , and recorded it so you can get an idea how exactly the new controller works. AMD and LogiTech also had some interesting booths set up, so head over and see the pictures yourself.
"Walking through the venue we spotted CNN's Eric Lanford the host of "News To Me" on HLN. He joined CNN in 2007 and his show is the first cable news program comprised entirely of user-generated video. Eric Lanford looked to be enjoying the Inada Sogno massage chair. This massage chair is supposed to send massage therapists running for the hills as it has customized massage sessions for 106 body types and offers 1,200 square inches of massage coverage. Ryan published a summary of NVISION08 yesterday, covering the highlights of the show and going into much more depth that he had time to do while experimenting with liveblogging. There was one big announcement that didn't make it into that article, because nVIDIA had been keeping it under their hats, ready to be pulled out when everyone was getting ready to leave.
Intel's X58 chipset will natively support SLI, no special logic chips required. Suddenly the not so exciting update to Intel's chipset lineup just became the new hot item, supporting both Crossfire and SLI. You won't get a watered down version either, it will support 2, 3 and 4 graphics cards, beating even nVIDIA's chipset which will handle 3 graphics cards plus 1 that handles physics computation. There is a bit of bad news tied in with good, not every motherboard will support SLI. There will be certain models that can, and certain others that will be missing the required code in the BIOS. "NVIDIA decided to wait until the 11th hour to drop a bombshell on the media with information on the first non-NVIDIA chipset to natively support SLI multi-GPU technology. Come in and see all the details of 'how' and 'why' as well as what it means to the rest of the NVIDIA world." Here are some more Shows and Expos articles from around the web:

It seems there are some cranky people just waiting to get the attention of attendee's to NVIDIA's NVISION 08 conference! We are not sure who is passing these leaflets out, but Ryan was accosted by them and forced to take pictures of their propaganda! Ok, maybe he wasn't forced, but Ryan does appreciate a bit of drama now and then!
The first obviously talks about the potentially large number of "flawed" chips that NVIDIA has sold to OEMs around the world. While these are mainly relegated to notebooks, accusations have surfaced that nearly all of NVIDIA's current chip inventories could be affected by this substrate flaw.
The second is the Wall Street Journal article talking about the chip issues that NV is having, and I am guessing this was given out to give a bit of background to what is happening. |
