Referencing the enclosed benchmarks present a difficult proposition. Should one upgrade to nVidia’s GeForce 3 with the NfiniteFX programmable architecture? The answer may not be so easy. Not withstanding Aquamark and DroneZ benchmarks, there will only be a few titles that take advantage of the programmable shaders when the GeForce 3 makes itself available to the masses. But, as exhibited, the GeForce does include a traditional 3D acceleration engine that’s considerably faster than that of the GeForce 2 Ultra. This speed increase means that the GeForce 3 can run most existing games at a very playable frame rate of around 60fps with FSAA enabled. Referencing the earlier benchmarks, clearly illustrates that the GeForce 3 outperformed the GeForce 2 Ultra at the highest settings and resolutions in older games such as Quake III. Therefore, it depends on your expectations and financial capability. If your intention is to take advantage of the highest settings and resolutions of your current games, than you may find benefit from the GeForce 3. If your intention is to maximize the performance of your currant game selection as well as readying yourself for the upcoming games that take advantage of the nFiniteFX architecture (id’s DOOM), then the GeForce 3 may be a viable investment. Whatever decision you make, sooner or later the GeForce 3 will reside in your computer. And when it does, you won’t be disappointed.

I would like to take a moment and place a special thanks to Mushkin for supplying 256 MB of their new Hyundai PC2100 memory. Without this, our 3DMark2001 score of 6016 would not have been possible. Also, special thanks go out to Massive Development for Aquamark and Zetha for DroneZ. Two of the most immersive examples of graphic technology ever developed. Also, I would like to thank Sterling over at Monarch Computer for supplying us with the Visiontek GeForce 3 card.
