So, yet another processor has jumped into the ring of the already swollen market. Is this a good thing? I can’t see why not. While the numbers for the 1.1 GHz Duron may not be overwhelming, they are considerably faster than anything else available in the budget field of processors. But is AMD pushing that right now?As with the release of the Duron 1.0 GHz processor a month ago, you will probably see AMD being pretty quiet about it. Why? They have a lot of other new things up their sleeves that we will soon see. Not just processors, but a big change is coming. With all that going on, AMD has their hands full. The release of the Duron 1.1 GHz processor is just a minor event in the schedule these next months.
But don’t underestimate the importance of the Duron line of processors. With the economy in a bit of a slump, it is the low-cost systems that are seeing the highest sales, and AMD wants to make sure they get a big part of it. The Duron absolutely whips up on the Celeron and even the cancelled Pentium III line. All AMD needs now is the support of OEMs and consumers and they will have the budget system in their control.
For the consumer’s that are reading this, however, seeing a 1.1 GHz processor release, no matter the name or core, may seem like a thing of the past. No doubt your eyes are looking forward (say, about a week?) to AMD’s plans for the future. All I can say about that for now is stay with Amdmb.com and keeping visiting the AMD Forums for the latest information!
I am going to carry over the rating of the 1.0 GHz Duron to its 1.1 GHz cousin and award the processor a 9 stars out of 10!
