Overclocking and System Setup
This content was originally featured on Amdmb.com and has been converted to PC Perspective’s website. Some color changes and flaws may appear.Just like its predecessor, the 8KHA+ motherboard is a great overclocking motherboard. Every option you could want to possibly set is included in the bios menus. There are the DRAM timings, interleaves, drive control and command rate options that will help you tweak all of your memory settings for top performance.
The actual overclocking options that Epox has given the 8KHA+ are superb. You can choose your front-side bus from 100 MHz to 199 MHz in single megahertz intervals. You can edit your CPU Vcore voltages anywhere from –0.1 v to +0.1 v different from the default. Multipliers from 5.x to 15x are also included which will also make the overclocking fiends drool.
How well did I do with it? Well, using the Athlon XP 1800+ (which I just reviewed) I was able to reach a front side bus up to 171 MHz and got the processor at a very fast 1.7 GHz without breaking a sweat or a processor. Also, pushing the voltage all the way up, I could get the processor up to the same speed, by just using the new multipliers above 12.5x.
Another note, I was able to reach about the same FSB will three different kinds of memory. First, was Corsair XMS240 memory and then I tested it on the Crucial standard PC2100. A latecomer, the TwinMOS PC2100 memory was able to match the 171 MHz FSB with the Corsair brand memory. The TwinMOS representative that sent me the memory claimed it was stable up to PC2700 memory, but that they were not marketing it like that. I guess they were right!
Below is the system setup that I used for this review. Just like in my Duron 1.1 GHz review and the Athlon XP 1800+ review, I made the switch to Windows XP. All the benchmarks that you see now have been tested with the new operating system; so comparing the number directly is no longer a problem.
