Zalman CNPS-3100Gold Plus/CNPS-3100 Plus

Zalman a Korean company that splashed on the HSF scene cutting their eye teeth on producing “Quiet HSF’s” about a year ago, produce some of the highest quality, most beautiful heatsinks on the market today.

While both of the pictured heatsinks have been around for a while, you’ll notice the PLUS after their number. This signifies the new Fan mechanism that is no longer stationary, the fan pivots on the bracket to any position you want and the fan can easily be changed just by unlocking the brass thumb screw and replacing the fan with any size you wish 80, 92 or even 120 mm. The bracket can also accommodate two additional fans, if you so desire. The fan is a 92 mm Zalman labeled fan that produces 53 CFM’s at 31.1 dBA’s in normal mode. The fan unit can be purchased separately for $14.95 USD and I know a number of people who have done just that. Look for the FB123 at www.zalmantech.com

Now let’s get back to the beautiful Gold and Copper Flower heatsinks!! The gold plated heatsink on the right is just that, gold plated over copper and the unit on the right is all copper. I’ve put these two heatsinks together because during testing they proved to be performance equals.

The clip is pretty standard and can only be placed into position one way; you might be able to make out the cut out area in the fins that is there to accommodate the wider section of the clip. Installation was about normal for a clip that requires the use of a screwdriver to engage it. Above you can see the bottoms of the heatsinks, they are totally flat (checked with a machinist’s steel straight edge) and the contact surface has NO imperfections, real quality workmanship here!!!

The Photo’s give the impression that the Zalman CNPS-3100 Gold Plus and the Copper Plus are very large heatsinks, this, they are not, with physical dimensions of 95L x 52W x 65H, the Flower heatsinks will fit the majority of modern motherboards and they weigh in at 296 grams.

The suggested retail selling price for the Gold Flower w/fan/bracket is $ 49.95 USD and the Copper Flower w/fan/bracket is $39.95 USD For additional information or to purchase, visit www.zalmantech.com .

How well did the Zalman CNPS-3100 Gold/Copper Plus heatsinks perform on our quiet 1.4 GHz computer, quite well, I thought, check out the numbers below:

Noise Control Silverado

No study of Quiet HSF’s would be complete without the inclusion of the now world famous Silverado and thanks to Amil at www.chillblast.co.uk we’re able to include it in this study.

Pictured is the entire package including four “O” rings to be mounted over the pads on the CPU, well labeled power reducing (3 different voltages) adapters, four pads of noise dampening material to be placed under the socket of the motherboard and your motherboard tray to reduce heatsink vibrations, a supply of thermal paste and of course the Silverado itself.

One of the first things you notice is the height of the Silverado and you must make sure you case can handle such a large HSF. The dimensions are 114H x 58W x 80L mm and weighs in at 410 grams. The clip is pretty standard fair and installation provided no special problems other than it should be mounted to your motherboard prior to mounting the motherboard in your case.

As can be seen in our photos the heatsink is standard extruded aluminum and doesn’t have any special properties you wouldn’t find in other aluminum heatsinks.

The heatsink is topped off with two Nidec Gamma28 blowers that are attached to the heatsink via two brackets (note photo), now that’s different!! The Gamma28’s produce a total of 18 CFM’s at 38 dBA’s when operated at 12 volts.

The genius of the Silverado and what has caused such a world-wide stir is the 50 gram SILVER disc mounted to the bottom of the heatsink.

You may ask, why Silver?? The answer to your question is that Silver transfers and dissipates heat better than either aluminum or copper, thus the reason so many people around the world use Artic Silver II thermal compound.

The finish of the disc is flawless and highly polished; you can see the reflection of the background material in the disc.

If you were to look at the individual components that make up the Silverado, you might find the choices as interesting but nothing special, except maybe, for the Silver disc.

Put them all together and you have one unique, efficient, and powerfully quiet HSF. Let’s take a look on how the Noise Control Silverado performed:

Lowest Temp
91F – 32.8C
Average Temp

Without question the Noise Control Silverado is the best overall performer in our group of “Quiet HSF’s” For addition information or to purchase the Silverado contact www.chillblast.co.uk . The suggested retail selling price of the Silverado is £44.99 + VAT or $65.01 USD + shipping to the USA.
