Adding the Tyan Thunder K7X motherboard to the list of options for dual-Athlon enthusiasts still shows that the number of available boards for this platform is very low. Here at Amdmb.com, we have only looked at 4 total now, three of them from Tyan. There are one or two out that we have not looked at yet, however. Why has this list been kept so small? Well, first is mainly because of the problems AMD was having with their chipsets. AMD never quite got the MPX chipset right until it was too late. And then with the announcement of the AMD Opteron Processor we already see that AMD has turned its enterprise-level attention elsewhere. While that is good for the users and AMD in the long run, it makes the AMD workstation and server market rather weak. The product is very good, from the processors to the motherboards – just getting it accepted is difficult without the full assault of AMD’s marketing and promotional teams.
The Thunder K7X from Tyan does have a great feature set, one we have seen before on the Thunder K7 almost a full year ago. The addition of the 0-channel RAID and a working south bridge makes this the most well rounded of the server-level motherboards available for the Athlon MP platform.
You will be seeing a lot more of these motherboards in the coming weeks as we put together new servers using them. Be sure to keep checking back for that adventure! 🙂
