NVIDIA’s FX chipset was released with a lot of expectations. Being somewhat behind schedule and following their competitor, this chipset is NVIDIA’s attempt at regaining lost ground. One of NVIDIA’s strategies is to look towards the future, specifically, adopting the DirectX 9 graphics API from Microsoft. As a result, the FX chipset is built highly optimized for DirectX 9, however DirectX 9 games won’t be available for another few months.

This leaves us with a heavily optimized DirectX 9 video chipset with only DirectX 8 games to gauge real performance currently. So is the FX5600 a good card to buy for DirectX 8, in anticipation of DirectX 9? Are we risking making a poor investment by banking on the future? Today we will be looking at the MSI FX5600-VTDR128 video card based on the FX5600 chipset. Hopefully our in-depth evaluation of this product will help you decide whether or not this is something you want to invest in.
