The Futuremark and their graphics benchmarking suites are becoming a vital marketing tool for companies and an important diagnostic tool for consumers. Here we will compare 3DMark 2001SE results which tests primarily DirectX 8.1b capabilities..

Analysis

Looking at the results, we see that the Ti4800SE beats the FX5600 in every test, which continues the pattern established by the Freelancer and Morrowind tests done earlier this article. The Radeon 9700 beats the rest in vertex shading and pixel shading – features used heavily by game developers today. The FX5900 Ultra does extremely well in fill-rate but slower than the Radeon 9700 in vertex and pixel shader tests. An interesting note is that the Ti4800SE does really well in the fill-rate department – considerably better than the FX5600. In terms of raw performance of filling the screen-buffer, the Ti4800SE is still amazing.

3DMark 03 (v330)

3DMark 03 is the next step in Futuremark’s graphics benchmarking tool featuring some DirectX 9.0. 3DMark 03, like 3DMark 2001 SE, is an increasly important marketing tool used by various companies. It’s also a good diagnostic tool for users to see if their card and system is performing optimally.

Analysis

In terms of raw score, the FX5900 Ultra beats the Radeon 9700 by a significant 1000 point margin. In the low-mid class, the Radeon 9500 has superior shader performance compared to the FX5600, which is important in today’s games. The FX5200’s results look a bit disappointing, but one must remember that the FX5200 is an economy card and was never intended to be used for gaming (even though it supports DirectX 9).
