Zalman
is a name I have come to appreciate and respect over the past year. Zalman specializes in noise prevention
products and offers a full line of CPU, VGA and chip set coolers in addition to
other noise reduction and cooling related components for the PC
enthusiast. They also sell two power
supplies; in a 300 watt and 400 watt version.
Coming from Zalman, they are marketed as being very quiet “Noiseless”
power supplies.
The
Zalman Noiseless 400 ATX PSU comes in a black painted enclosure that includes
one rear mounted, temperature controlled cooling fan. There is no line voltage selector switch
because the Active Power Factor correction feature automatically senses the
applied voltage.

Zalman
includes a package of Velcro wire-ties to help you route wiring in a neat and
orderly manner along with a 4-pin to 3-pin fan adapter that has connectors for
both 5V and 12V fan operation. This is
to allow operating one or two case fans at either full or reduced speed for
added noise reduction. Be careful
though, some case fans won’t start turning with only 5V.

Two
large, aluminum heatsinks sit directly in the main airflow path, which should
help the Zalman PSU keep its cool. As we
will see in the next section, the Zalman Noiseless 400 watt PSU is the second
heaviest unit in this roundup thanks to a full compliment of large components.
