Enermax power supplies were one of the first to offer dual, temperature controlled fans.  These units are particularly popular with Intel based PC users.  Many different sizes and configurations are available, which permit temperature monitoring and fan speed control for low noise operation.

Here are a few pictures of the classic EG465-VE/FC with gold colored fan grills and extra long sleeved wiring harness.  It incorporates one 92mm intake and one 80mm exhaust fan.

The Enermax Whisper 431 PSU uses both a 92mm intake and 80mm exhaust fan for cooling.  One rather unique feature is that the rear 80mm fan is powered externally by plugging it into a motherboard fan header.  This allows the system to control the speed of the fan or shut it down during sleep mode.  The Enermax also uses an external temperature sensor, which measures internal case temperature rather than internal power supply temperature, and adjusts the PSU fan speed accordingly.

As I mentioned in the introduction, some power supply manufacturers rate their unit’s output capacity on rather low operating temperatures.  The Enermax Whisper 431 is a good example.  According to the specifications, the PSU can be operated at full load (431 watts) only if the temperature inside the power supply does not exceed 25ºC, which is not very realistic for most users.  If the operating temperature is more like 40ºC, then the full load output gets reduced to 80% or 345 watts (176 watts max. for combined +3.3V and +5V).

Here are a few pictures of the internal layout and components.  As you can see there is a lot of space going unused inside the Whisper 431 – not all bad as this allows for good airflow.
