PC Power & Cooling has a well-earned reputation for producing some of the best power supplies available anywhere.  They are commonly specified for server class operation and Dream Machine builds.  The down side to all this perceived quality is cost.  PC Power & Cooling power supplies are undoubtedly some of the most expensive units available.

The Turbo-Cool 510 is the next to largest PSU in the Turbo-Cool family.  It incorporates active Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuitry, which is required in Europe (units over 200 VA).  The TurboCool 510 ATX is also available in a deluxe version that includes a black case and fan grill, braided sleeve wire harnesses and voltage adjustment access.

One of the PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 PFC power supplies main selling points is its true power output rating.  As we mentioned before, some manufacturers rate their PSUs at unrealistically low operating temperatures.  This results in significantly reduced real-world power output capabilities.  Not the PC Power & cooling Turbo-Cool units.  The Turbo-Cool 510 is rated at 510 watts output at 40ºC operating temperature.

  • Power output @ 25ºC = 600 watts
  • Power output @ 40ºC = 510 watts
  • Power output @ 50ºC = 460 watts

Just as we saw with the Silencer 400, the main wiring harnesses on the standard Turbo-Cool 510 are not sleeved but the wire used is heavy gauge with a nice pliable insulation that makes the wiring easy to work with.  There are only two 4-pin Molex connectors per cable, which helps minimize the voltage drop to peripheral devices.

The Turbo-Cool 510 PFC also has two Serial ATA connectors, which include the newly specified +3.3V lines.  These are true Serial ATA connectors; not adapters.

Something else worth noting for anyone considering 12 VDC TEC coolers is that the Turbo-Cool 510 watt PSU provides up to 34 Amps on the 12V rail!

As you can see in the pictures above, the PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 is jam-packed with components and large heatsinks.  No wonder they only use one 80mm fan – there isn’t room for a second fan.  As we will see later, the Turbo-Cool 510 weighs more than any other PSU in this roundup.
