Image Quality – Far Cry 1.1

We, of course, had to use Far Cry to get some IQ screenshots as well.  I decided to use the Fort map as it provided two very good spots for testing both AA and AF in the same area and you can easily do the same thing on your machine at home.

Jaggies can be seen everywhere on the 0x0x images; the crossbeams on the hut, the box in front of you and even your gun.  The 4x8x images are a breath of fresh air in comparison.  I was hard pressed to find some differences between the NVIDIA and ATI quality.  On the scope part of the gun, it looks like the ATI card is showing a bit of “jagginess” that the NVIDIA-based eVGA card is not.  However, on the top section of the hut, where the clouds are first seen from the top, the ATI card is doing a slightly better job of reducing the appearance of jagged lines.  From what I saw, I’d say the ATI card may have a very small AA advantage over the NVIDIA cards here.

From the obvious blurring of the floor boards in front of you to the horrible jagged edges seen where the sand meets the wood flooring towards the back, this is another view that makes AA and AF so obviously a good choice for a gaming experience.  What you can’t see in this still shot is the banding that occured as you walked across the floor towards the shark as a result of the filtering taking place.

With 8xAF enabled, I honestly couldn’t see a difference in the two vendors image quality.  I had to have flipped back and forth looking at specific parts of the images at least 50 times with nothing that I could honestly call a degradation on either companies part.
