Application: DivX and MP3 Encoding, WinRAR and PCMarks
AMD’s aging Thoroughbred core is able to out pace the new Prescott core here in the MP3 encoding application, LAME MP3, by a full 18 seconds; even with slower memory speed.
With SSE2 power in the Celeron D processor, the new DivX 5.1.1 codec takes full advantage of it to push the XMPEG encoding speed of Intel over AMD by 20%.
The slower clock speeds on these processors push them both way behind the scores of our fastest machines, with the Celeron having a comfortable lead of over 30 seconds on a 2 GB file.
Both PCMarks agree that the processors are very competitive and that the Celeron has increased memory speeds, but the new 04 version shows these difference to be less apparent.
