Image Quality – Far Cry
Far Cry is another game where IQ is a big issue as the level of detail on the game is so high compared to nearly all other titles. It was a great oppurtunity for IQ testing as well because of it.
Far Cry 1.1 – Antialiasing Quality
Both cards look equally bad here without any semblance of AA enabled on this shot.
This is a MUCH improved image with the majority of the aliasing gone from the screen. Again we see the ATI AA algorithms provide a bit of a softer touch on the nearly-90 degree lines, such as the bar going left to right across the back of the thatch-roof hut. With the background being the white sky, we can more easily see the harsher edges that appear on the NVIDIA card, but just like on the Doom 3 tests, the differences are small and are difficult to notice during gameplay.
Far Cry 1.1 – Anisotropic Filtering Quality
For examining the AF quality of the two competing cards, look right under the targetting cursor at the wood floor boards as well as the side of the hut and the floor beneath it.
Again we see the miracle of anisotropic filtering is much more viable in a game like Far Cry where it makes a huge difference. Doom 3 didn’t show as wide a margin of IQ because Medium Quality still applies some AF. Here we see the first part of the floor boards before we reach the hanging shark are pretty much the same on both cards. Approaching the hut, the ground actually looks a bit sharper on the ATI image, looking at the spot of red on the ground and the floor board line detail. The side of the hut itself shows no difference in IQ however, making the differences between the two cards here very minute.
