City of Heroes
City of Heroes (DirectX)
City of Hereos has quickly become one of my favorite games, drawing me away from work for hours at a time…and it also happens to be quite demanding for a MMORPG game so I decided to use it as a benchmark and justify that monthly charge to my credit card.
All the visual options were turned up as high as they could go (HIGH and 200%).
Getting repeatable results in an online game can be tricky, but I think I’ve solved it by doing a course run through on the tutorial map with a beginning character. There is rarely anyone on this map so other players won’t affect my performance and as my charater doesn’t change and the missions can be reset by simply logging out, this is the perfect area to get some benchmark numbers.
In both the 0x0x and 4x8x tests at 1024×768 testing, the 6800NU and the AA6800 card were about the same in terms of performance and both performed slightly better than the ATI card as well.
At 1280×1024 with AA and AF turned on we do start to see the power of the overclocked AA6800, making this resolution much more enjoyable to play at than it was on the stock 6800 card. The ATI X800 Pro, seeing frame rates drop into the teens quite a few times is probably not going to cut it.
Without AA and AF, all three cards can do pretty well at this high of a resolution on City of Heroes, but with the IQ turned up to 4xAA and 8xAF, we see the AA6800 overclocked doing a much better job of handling it. Though whether or not this setting would be playable depends a lot on the gamer, online gaming is usually more forgiving of low frame rates than offline games.
