Gaming: Quake III and UT2003

With the discrete graphics (X800XT) the ATI XPRESS 200 chipset does very well on this test, falling between the NF4 and the VIA K8T890 results. I also decided this would be a good place to test the integrated graphics core as well, so we threw that in here as well. The results are kind of what we expected for an X300-based solution: playable, but not even close to what you can get with an external card. Our settings had this set at the maximum 128 MB buffer, and our scores showed that the aging Q3 engine is playable at 1600×1200 with all the settings maxed out, but just barely.

With the discrete graphics running, the ATI board is able to keep pace with the best from NVIDIA and VIA. I also tested the integrated X300 core on the UT2003 engine as well with results that show the game playable at 1280×1024 resolutions and lower, with the Max Detail levels enabled. That isn’t too bad for an on-board graphics core, but I am sure many gamers would want more out of their regular gaming system.
