Installation

For this review, I will be using an AMD Athlon 64 CPU so I attached the K8/P4 universal retention bracket to the existing steel backing plate in the K8 configuration with two machine screws.

Once the retention bracket is securely attached to the motherboard the Hyper 48 can be carefully set into position (after properly cleaning the heatsink base and CPU, and applying a small amount of thermal compound of course).

Attaching the two spring steel mounting clips proved to be quite easy — much more so than installing the Hyper 6 cooler.  The Hyper 48 fit perfectly into the space allocated on the Asus motherboard without interference with any nearby components.

A word of caution: the Hyper 48 HSF weighs a hefty 864g (actually my review sample weighed in at 843g), which is well over the recommended Intel and AMD spec of 450g.  I would not recommend transporting a PC with this heatsink installed.
