OpenGL Gaming – Doom 3, Warhammer 40K
Doom 3, 1024×768 – HIGH details.
This Doom 3 test is interesting, not only is the newer, cheaper X700 Pro 128MB nearly matched in the average framerate compared to the older and more expensive Radeon 9800XT, it also has a better minimum too! To contradict the synthetic game benchmarks (Aquamark 3 and 3DMark), the DDR2 RAM is not showing to be a huge advantage… at least not in Doom 3.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
1280×1024 Medium details. Unit Occlusion ON.
Here we see something extraordinary – the newer, cheaper X700 Pro coupled with DDR2 on the Asus P5GD2 absolutely demolishes all other systems. Even the P5GD2’s minimum framerate nearly matches the K8T800 Pro’s average rate! The programming in Warhammer clearly benefits the Asus P5GD2.
ATI’s improvements on the Radeon architecture (used in the RFadeon X700) can be seen in OpenGL performance in games like Doom 3 and Warhammer. This is a good reason to upgrade to the Asus P5GD2 and to PCI Express in general.
