Gaming: Doom 3 and Far Cry 1.3

Doom 3

I ran the default timedemo, ‘timedemo demo 1’, three times on each resolution and quality setting, and took the average of the second and third scores.  We ignored the first one as it was always much slower than the following ones as the game was caching textures off the hard drive.

Far Cry

This is a custom demo we use in various PCP articles, run three times and average the second and third iterations.

In Doom 3 our 820 processor was able to keep up with the much more expensive 840 XE processor as well as the Intel 550 processor.  It can’t keep up with even the lowest Athlon 64 on our test bed, the 3500+ though.  Far Cry shows similar results as well though at the highest resolution of 1600×1200 the 820 just didn’t have enough power to keep up with the higher clocked P4s or the Athlon 64s.
