Issues and Conclusions

Here is my end game summary for the XFX line up as we saw it today.

XFX 7800 GTX (450/1.25) – PV-T70F-UNF7

The standard XFX model of the 7800 GTX GPU is still technically overclocked 20 MHz over the default core clock speed and 50 MHz over the default memory clock speed.  That obviously translates into increased performance over any cards that are sold at clocks lower than that, as you would expect.

The real value in this model comes in the form of the free XFX USB controller that you get with your purchase that is easily worth another $30 on its own.  Plus the inclusion of the T-shirt and adaptors/dongles makes this a good complete package.

XFX 7800 GTX (490/1.30) – PV-T70F-UND7

This model from XFX is an absolute screamer and it looks like it has the title of the fastest GPU on the planet, at least for the time being.  No other vendor is offering a card out of the box that is clocked higher than the 490 MHz that XFX has here.  If you want the fastest gaming platform then you should definitely be looking at this card right here.

What’s the real kicker in all this?  Both of these cards are priced at nearly the same level.  Currently, as of this writing, the 450/1.25 model is priced at $529 at ZipZoomFly while the 490/1.30 model is priced at $539.  So for a $10 price difference, what is more important to you: the controller or the additional default clock speed?

That’s really a personal question, but if it were up to me, I’d go ahead with the cheaper model that comes with the excellent controller and then overclock that card to as close to the 490/1.30 specs as I could, knowing that I still got a heck of deal.

The 7800 GTX market is definitely a breath of fresh air for us at PC Perspective.  Here is a GPU that has been out only a little over a month, stock is plentiful and you can find the cards for UNDER their MSRP at launch.  Remember finding $499 MSRP X800 XT PE cards for some 4 months after launch for $799 and higher?  I am sure glad those days are past us…at least for now.

Final Thoughts

XFX has a winner on their hands, regardless of which particular model we are referring to.  If you want an overclocked card with a great bundle, the 450/1.25 PV-T70F-UNF7 model is exceptional.  If you just want the absolute fastest GPU then the 490/1.30 PV-T70F-UND7 is what you are looking for.
