Special Features
Even though the EP-9U1697 is a budget-minded board, EPoX did not leave it bare of some interesting features.

GhostBIOS allows you to flash your BIOS in the event your onboard BIOS becomes corrupted. When this occurs, GhostBIOS automatically runs when your system is restarted, and you are prompted to insert a CD or floppy disk containing a BIOS image and a copy of AWDFlash. Both files are downloadable from EPoX’s website, and EPoX has thoughtfully included a “SAFE” BIOS image and AWDFlash on the driver CD for this purpose. You can use your own CD or floppy if you prefer using a more updated version of BIOS to restore from.

ThunderProbe is a piece of software engineered by EPoX to deliver critical system health information like temperature, fan RPMs, and voltages to the Windows desktop. Besides reporting these readings, ThunderProbe also allows you to adjust the SmartFan settings without having to go into the BIOS. Alarms can be set to warn you of abnormal behaviour, or shut-down your system.

The only thing severely lacking from EPoX’s ThunderProbe software is its ability to overclock the system bus.

More interesting is the GhostMonitor option – when enabled displays a semi-transparent reading of your CPU temperature, voltage, and CPU load on your desktop. I really like the way GhostMonitor functions and looks, much better than the solutions used by other manufacturers.

The one thing ThunderProbe does not do is adjust any frequencies or voltages. This means any overclocking done within Windows will have to be done using ClockGen or similar (voltages still require you to be in the BIOS).

Other special EPoX features are: SmartFan fan control, diagnostic LED, onboard power-on/reset switches, and thermal probe support (probe not included).
