Acer Shows New Ferrari Notebooks

Acer has been in the mobile business for a long time, off and on under their own brand in the US.  They are beginning to do so again, so we thought we’d see what else they were preparing for 2006.

This first model is the Acer 3020 using the Core Duo processor and Intel 945GM chipset.  It has a 12.1″ screen, is a beauty to look at, and weighs less than 3.4 lbs!  This notebook is obviously meant for a frequent traveler.

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum is the Acer 9800 model, sporting an HD-DVD drive as its focus.  It’s mammoth 20.1″ screen is powered by the GeForce Go 7600 GPU and dual 120GB hard drives in a RAID configuration to keep your data safe and secure.  There is a sub-woofer on the bottom of the notebook, though they had headphones at the display to demo the sound.  Judging by the size of the HD-DVD box to the left, this super powerful, Core Duo machine might break a few backs!

Moving from the extreme to the elegant, Acer’s partnership with Ferrari continues with two new models.  This first one is the Ferrari 5000 that uses the AMD Turion 64 X2 processor and a 15.4″ screen powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GPU.  It even has an HDMI video output connection and has a very solid build quality as you would expect.

Even more exciting is the Ferrari 1000 model that takes the Ferrari branding to a smaller, 12.1″ screen configuration.  It still uses the new AMD Turion 64 X2 processor and weighs only 3.5 lbs loaded.  The little devies to the right is a Bluetooh VoIP phone that hides away in the PCMCIA slot; even better is that the battery on the phone is recharged when docked as well.

Final Thoughts

So far, the notebook selection at Computex 2006 has been pretty incredible.  While we expected to see some new designs, the innovation seen with the Lamborghini, Ferrari and HD-DVD models is impressive in a market where clones are really the norm.  The rest of this year promises to be an exciting one for anyone computing on the move.

We’ll have more mobile coverage from Computex later as well as updates on motherboards, processors, video cards, cases and cooling and more!  Stay tuned!
