Design and Construction

With the Lamborghini name emblazoned on the laptop, you immediate hold its design and construction to a higher standard, so does Asus do the legendary automaker justice?

If you’re talking about appearances, the VX1 deserves to have that Lamborghini logo proudly displayed. The lid of the laptop is reminiscent of the side intakes of a 2005 Lamborghini Concept S, and there is even a mesh detail that’s similar to what you would find on the car. The soft and hard feature lines gives the laptop a bold automotive feel, and of course the high-gloss paint finish gives a shine that would make you want to take the VX1 out to your driveway every Sunday and wax to the envy of your neighbours.

Interestingly, the Asus logo is not located in the middle of the laptop lid as it would on any other unit, instead the tech company’s logo is off to the corner near the bottom leaving Lamborghini to have the spotlight.

The laptop has a very assuring weight to it though the laptop itself has a rather slim profile. The construction material is very strong and it doesn’t bend, creak, or flex handled, poked, and torqued (yes, I gave the VX1 a slight twist to see how it feels). Rest assured the Asus-Lamborghini is very well constructed and can withstand the rigours of daily use and transportation. Just be careful not to scratch it, so make use of the included laptop sleeve and carrying bag.

Opening the laptop reveals a charcoal grey keyboard on a brushed aluminum surface. To keep the laptop looking uncluttered and simple, special function buttons are slim and nondescript. Even the activity LEDs are small points of light rather than large indicators you would find on typical laptops. This all gives the Asus VX1 a very sophisticated look that is simple yet refined.

Along the top of the keyboard are special function buttons that are found on nearly all Asus laptops: touch pad, Power4Gear, BlueTooth, web browser, and WiFi buttons. They are barely noticeable, and there is even a microphone built into the top-right corner, but it’s easily missed.

The touchpad is smooth and with a little texture to help tracking, and the keyboard is typical of an Asus laptop where the keys are a bit soft with a light click. When the VX1 is active, the touchpad is backlit with a nice blue light.

Speakers can be seen along the front edge of the VX1. We will examine the speakers more in the Audio section of this review.

The front of the laptop is clear of any ports or connections. This helps keep your lap clear of any wires and makes for a very tidy desk when it’s all wired up.

Along the left hand side of the laptop there is a slim DVD drive that helps cut down on the thickness of the VX1. The ExpressCard and the VX1’s mini Firewire port are found together. A VGA and Kensington lock port finish up the rear.

On the back of the laptop, there is nothing to note except the battery which comes in 4-cell and 8-cell flavors. Because of the way the lid is hinged, there aren’t any ports or connections here.

Finally on the right-hand side you have all your USB ports (4 of them),LAN, modem and audio jacks, and a SD card / memory stick reader. I personally don’t like the USB ports being located here because wires get in the way of a mouse especially if you have lots of peripherals and hubs connected. The laptop’s exhaust is also located here which makes for a toasty right side. Swapping the USB ports with the DVD drive on the leftside of the laptop may have been a better design decision.

If you’re looking to upgrade some parts in the Asus VX1, you have access to both SODIMM slots, the CPU, WiFi, and HDD through the panels on the base of the laptop. The CPU and GPU are located near the right hand side of the laptop, so no wonder it gets very warm in that area.
