The new Futuremark 3DMark06 benchmark was released just a few months ago and has already become a popular test for GPU benchmarks and CPUs as well. You can see my full overview of the new benchmark, what it has to offer over the 2005 version and some other initial scores from my previous article.
In our 3DMark06 tests, the 8800 GTS is able to best the 7900 GTX by a healthy 35% but falls behind the GTX model by 22% or so. Even at 1280×1024 resolution, the SLI configuration gets a 43% scaling in performance, running past the GTX card.
Interestingly, the fill rate on the 8800 GTS card is lower than that of the 7900 GTX, though the 8800 GTS pixel shading and vertex shading power is greater; this goes to show us that the majority of the 7900 GTXs ROPs were being under-utilized.
