Power Consumption and Final Thoughts

Testing power consumption was done by testing idle power at the desktop and testing load while running 3DMark06 at 2560×1600.

BFG Tech GeForce 8800 GTS and SLI Review - Graphics Cards 53

The BFG GeForce 8800 GTS card uses less power than the 8800 GTX by more than 30 watts when under load and 10 watts at idle.  When in SLI mode, however, the power draw is pretty intense, popping over 430 watts!  Impressively though, the 8800 GTS does use LESS power than the 7900 GTX model we tested here.

BFG’s GeForce 8800 GTS card has already been on the market for over a month and the response has been very enthusiastic from gamers and reviewers alike.  While not the fastest card we have tested here at PC Perpsective, the 8800 GTS definitely has enough muscle to impress just about anyone.

The performance of the BFG 8800 GTS card was very impressive for its sub-$450 price point.  Running past NVIDIA’s previous flagship GPU, the GeForce 7900 GTX with relative ease, the only competition for the 8800 GTS is actually the 8800 GTX.  User’s that are looking for a new GPU for an upgrade or fresh system build will find the BFG 8800 GTS very inviting as the price is modest and the performance is spectacular.

The GeForce 8800 GTS Core

In games like Battlefield 2 and BF 2142, HL2: Lost Coast and Prey, playing at resolutions up to 2560×1600 (for that 30″ Dell monitor you surely got from Santa??) is an exhilerating experience that really needs to be seen to be expressed.  Other titles like Call of Duty 2 and FEAR are still a bit too intense graphically for the GTS cards to handle at image quality settings that high, but running at 1920×1200 or 2048×1536 won’t be much of an issue and will still produce fantastic gaming.

Adding in a second GTS card, more likely later rather than now, opens up the ability to play just about ANY game at resolutions of 2560×1600 should you feel the urge to do so down the road.  Any games that will be released should be little match for a setup like this, even DX10 titles, if they ever show up.

Comparisons with the 8800 GTX

Comparing the 8800 GTX and 8800 GTS models involves looking at how you plan on gaming, what performance levels you want to see and what price you want to aim for.  Currently, the BFG 8800 GTX can be found for $589 while the BFG 8800 GTS can be found for $429.  That’s a difference of $160; see how I did that math in my head??  Is the performance gain from the GTS to the GTX worth that $160 to you?  That’s a decision only you can make, but in my mind the GTS looks like a great deal for a high-end graphics card without that super-high-end price tag.

Don’t forget — the GTS only requires a single PCIe power connector, has a smaller PCB and demands less of your power supply than a GTX card would.

Pricing and Availability

As I already mentioned above, the BFG 8800 GTS card can be found for as little as $429 and is widely available at most online e-tailers like Newegg.com.  Other NVIDIA partners have cards selling for around the $430 mark as well, including EVGA, Asus and XFX.  BFG Tech has some advantages though as the company gives gamers a lifetime warranty on their card as well as 24/7 technical support, all included with your purchase.  BFG was the first company to offer such support for our enthusiast community and because of that they have been well received by the gaming community.

Final Thoughts

The BFG GeForce 8800 GTS card is an outstanding graphics card that promises to deliver outstanding performance for any game you can throw at it.  Our evaluation proved that the BFG 8800 GTS can handle gaming at incredible frame rates even at XHD resolutions like 2560×1600 with a price tag that won’t make you cry; at least not once the gaming has commenced.  With NVIDIA SLI technology, the possibility of adding a second 8800 GTS card leaves room for improvement down the road as well.  For gamer’s looking for the right card for a new gaming system, the BFG 8800 GTS is a perfect fit.
