A Closer Look – Inside

A quick look inside the right side with the F-plate removed reveals one side of the optical drive bays.  Removing the second larger, rear plate on the right side gives an even better look inside the case.  Note: Zalman does not encourage removing this plate or any other parts on the case for that matter.  Doing so may void your warranty, oh no!  Seriously, if you’re mechanically challenged and not sure about what you are doing, leave it alone.  If on the other hand, you are experienced in similar matters and willing to accept responsibility for your actions, go for it.

Moving around to the left side of the case with the door open offers a different view inside the Fatal1ty FC-ZE1 enclosure.  Notice that the inside has the same black anodized finish as the outside.  (Makes taking pictures more of a challenge… 🙂

The motherboard mounts on threaded standoffs on the larger, rear side plate on the right hand side of the case.  This plate is not meant to be a removable motherboard tray.  In fact removing it serves little purpose other than to help take pictures.

One of the more unique features of the Fatal1ty FC-ZE1 enclosure is the internal HDD cage.  It will hold up to three 3.5′ HDDs, is permanently mounted, and located right behind the two front intake fans for cooling.

Each HDD is held between apposing pairs of rubber rollers, which help isolate vibration and minimize noise.  To install a drive, you simply insert it into an open slot and then gently push it back against the foam block in the rear to let the rubber roller in front fall down and securely hold the drive in position.  Small locking screws are provided on each of the front roller assemblies to lock them in place if desired.

The drive cage is mounted pretty close to the front fans, which might appear to block the incoming airflow significantly, but as we will see later, the overall case cooling is very good.  I would like to see a little more open area (larger openings) on the side of the drive cage to let more air in over the drives, please.
