A Closer Look (Cont’d)

The Zalman ZM600-HP 600W modular power supply has a full assortment of cables and connectors.  The three main power cables are hard-wired into the PSU chassis while modular cables are used for powering the peripheral devices along with an additional 8-pin CPU or PCI-e connector.  There are three different sizes of output connectors on the front of the power supply for attaching the modular cables.  The three on the left are used for powering various 4-pin optical and HDD drives, while the two in the middle provide power to the SATA cables.  The single 8-pin connector on the right is used for a second PCI-e cable or a second EPS 12V 8-pin connector.

The wiring harnesses measure approximately 18’~20′ long to the first connector and all of the cables are covered with black plastic mesh sleeving.  The peripheral drive connectors all use the EZ grip style connectors and feature gold plated terminals.

Zalman includes one of their ZM-MC1 Multi-connectors with the power supply.  The Multi-connector is a 4-pin to 3-pin adapter that has one 3-pin fan connector wired for 12V (black) and the other one wired for 5V (white).  This gives the option of running one or more case fans on either 12V (full speed) or 5V (low speed => very quiet).

Here are a few pictures showing the layout and components inside the Zalman ZM600-HP power supply.  Zalman has primarily used Fortron-Source Sparkle (FSP) to manufacture power supplies for them in the past and they appear to be continuing that tradition with the ZM600-HP.  FWIW, the more conservatively rated ZM600-HP is very similar to the OCZ GameXstream 700W PSU, which is also made by FSP and uses virtually all of the same parts on the circuit boards.

As noted on the box, Zalman uses two AC bridge rectifiers instead of one, three power MOSFET transistors in the Active PFC stage instead of two, and eight Schottky rectifiers in the final DC stage (four for the +12V, two for the +5V, and two for the +3.3V output).  Using more components in parallel reduces the load on individual parts, which allows them to run cooler and more efficient.

The majority of the capacitors used in the ZM600-HP PSU are rated for 105ºC except for the large CapXon part used in the Active PFC circuit on the AC stage that is rated for 85ºC.  The AC section typically runs a little cooler than the DC side so this is quite acceptable.
