A Closer Look
The Thermaltake Toughpower enclosure is painted a glossy dark gray and uses a single 140mm fan on the bottom side for cooling. The fan speed is dynamically adjusted based on power supply load and temperature. As you can see in the following picture, the fan guard is formed from the sheet metal housing — functional, but a wire guard would be a little less restricting and nicer looking.
The large seven bladed fan is manufactured by Yate Loon Electronics (D14BH-12) and is capable of moving a large amount of air to keep all the internal bits cool. (Note: this is a high-speed version of the D14BM-12 used in the Toughpower 750W PSU.)
A clear plastic shroud forces the fan to blow air into the front of the power supply to better cool all the internal components. The open honeycomb grill on the back of the PSU presents minimal restriction to the flow of exhaust air. All the new Toughpower power supplies incorporate active power factor correction (PFC) so there is no AC line voltage selector switch on the rear panel. Each unit has a power cord receptacle and On-Off switch.
There are 7 keyed sockets on the front of the power supply where the various modular cables plug into. The two red sockets are for two additional PCI-E cables/connectors if needed (for a total of four).
The Thermaltake power supply comes with a full complement of cables and connectors. The wiring harnesses measure approximately 20′ long to the first connector and all of the cables are covered with black mesh sleeving. The main 24-pin power cable and two of the four PCI-E cables are hard-wired, while all the remaining peripheral cables are modular.
Quad +12V outputs
The Toughpower 850W power supply has four 12V outputs (+12V1, +12V2, +12V3, and +12V4). The following table shows the capacity and what connectors are supplied by each output. This is a rather unique configuration with the +12V3 and +12V4 outputs rated at 30A each.
Note: During testing I placed a 25A load on the single +12V4 output using the two modular PCI-E connectors and two CSI3710A electronic loads without any issues.
Here are a few pictures showing the layout and components inside the Toughpower 850W PSU.

Overall, the internal layout is clean and relatively spacious, especially for an 850W PSU. The Toughpower series all appear to be built by Channel Well, which is a big improvement over some previous Thermaltake PSUs.
