Wireless Performance

Using NTTTCP, a network bandwidth testing tool made by Microsoft, we test the wireless adapter performance of the Aurora mALX. We perform two tests: one from 2″ from the antenna to reduce the effects of interference; and another test 30′ away which is more susceptable to interference and broadcast problems (i.e. transmission through walls). The first test at 2″ is more accurate and repeatable, whereas the test at 30′ is more erratic and should only be used for informational purposes only.

Wireless networking on the Aurora mALX is on par with the wireless results of the other systems at 2″ from the wireless receiver. At 30 feet, the mALX shows poor performance, but there are many other variables that can influence this number like nearby interference.

The Atheros antenna, however, is a bit more sensitive than the Intel Wireless controller on the Core 2 Centrino platform. At any given moment, the mALX could detect 5 wireless networks from my office desk, whereas the Asus Z96J using the Intel adapter only detects 3. Whether or not the Atheros performs well with such weak signals is another question and if you go by the 30′ results the answer is the Atheros adapter will probably perform poorly.
