Alienware has designed the bottom of the mALX to be highly accessible. There is one main cover which hides the two NVIDIA GeForce Go7900GTX cards. The interesting thing about these two video cards is that they are removable and upgradeable. The mALX manual shows you how to upgrade the graphics which is not something you see every day from a laptop manufacturer.
The system we received for review had two 1024MB DDR SODIMM modules which occupies both memory slots. You can also get the system configured with 1GB of RAM with two 512MB modules.
Under another cover are the WiFi module and a free mini-card slot for upgrades.
Two SATA 2.5″ drives manufactured by Seagate give the mALX its RAID functionality. You can get the mALX with a single drive and upgrade to RAID later. The drives included in our sample are 100GB Seagate 7200.1 Momentus drives, but you can go with slower drives with higher capacity.
Overall the design of the Alienware Aurora mALX is very good. There is no significant issue I can see by looking at it. Perhaps the biggest problem would be its cumbersome size, but buyers of this notebook should already know what they’re getting into.
The BIOS
The BIOS of the Alienware Aurora mALX is very plain and there isn’t anything here exceptional worth remarking. It has all your standard device settings, simple security password, and boot sequence. The images say it all.
