PCMark and DVD Performance

Now let’s turn our attention to some of the other parts of the system starting with an overview look using PCMark ’05.

There’s a little surprise here. Even though the Seagate Momentus 5400 RPM drive is spec’ed at a lower RPM than the 7200 RPM drives in the Asus Z96J and the Dell M1710, the G2’s hard drive comes close to matching the Dell’s performance. This is a bit curious and we will be taking a closer look at the hard drive performance later.

To test the performance of the DVD drive, we clone a DVD using DVD Decrypter and measure how quickly it can do that operation.

Not exactly the fastest optical drive we’ve tested here. It’s perfectly fine for watching DVDs and what-not. But when it comes to copy large amounts of data off the disc, the operation takes a little longer compared to our other systems. Just go grab a snack and come back.
