FEAR (DirectX 9)

One of the most impressive games of E3 2005 turned out to be one of the most graphically intense as well.

*** Note: we have disabled Soft Shadows in all the below tests despite what the screen indicates above.  And since we were using the retail game this time, I opted to use the in-game “settings test” fly by to compare performance.

Just as we saw with the initial 8600 GTS review last week, NVIDIA’s Vista drivers are having some problems with the 8600 cards and FEAR even with the latest patches.  The 8600 GT can’t even come close in performance and there are some MAJOR hitching problems being seen in the game and even during the menu navigation.  Interestingly, the 7600 GT card with the same drivers has none of these problems and can nearly outperform the X1650 XT card.
