With the keynote speech over, a lot of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the IDF has faded, but that doesn’t mean the news is over.  AnandTech has a chance for a close-up look at a robot car, new laptops and WiMAX as well as wireless power.  You can also get more details on yesterdays Silverthorne and Menlow news.

Make sure you catch the updates on Ray Tracing.  We heard about Daniel Pohl’s Raytraced Quake 3 & 4 mod right here on PC Perspective just before Christmas, using the same rendering technology that movie makers use to create such beautiful effects on screen.  Ryan caught up with him at the IDF, and they talked about the death of rasterization, and the improvements that Ray Tracing on the PC has seen.  Among other things, the technology scales beautifully on multiple cores.
“The major announcements of IDF have come and gone. The Nehalem demos and Silverthorne were exactly what IDF is known for, but the show does go on after the keynotes and today’s coverage gives you a taste of exactly that.

Menlow is the “platform” (read: chipset + CPU), Silverthorne is the CPU, and the development on all of this started about three years ago. The goal was simple: reduce power, compared to Centrino, by 10x in order to make it into ultra small, ultra portable devices. Once the design had been finalized, it was clear that this chip could not only be used in UMPCs but also in things like consumer electronics devices and embedded systems.”
