Bioshock (DirectX 10)


An impressive FPS-based game with a great story, Bioshock impresses with both graphics and its ability to drag you along in the gameplay.  It has both DX9 and DX10 render paths and should make a great benchmark for graphics cards promising the best of both worlds.

Looking at our single card tests first, the obvious winner here is the NVIDIA 8800 GTX card that is able to push out over 50 frames per second.  The HD 2900 XT card comes in last here behind the 8800 GTS 640MB card that is actually a closer price-competitor.

Scaling on Bioshock is obviously in a state of confusion – neither SLI nor CrossFire is particularly impressive.  The 8800 GTX sees a 22% increase in the average frame rate and the 8800 GTS 640MB cards see a 30% increase.  Both do have a gain in the minimum frame rate, but the results are difficult to nail down as performance was somewhat erratic; the 8800 GTS has a better minimum frame rate than the 8800 GTX, for example.  CrossFire is even worse though with inverse scaling on both the average FPS and minimum — two cards run slower than a single one on Bioshock.
