As you may have heard during our 22nd PC Perspective podcast, there is a lot of speculation as to what the fate of HD DVD will be.  We are not the only ones who differ on what is going on, I would bet that Vivid was the deal breaker when they decided to go with Blu-ray back in January.

Looking at the headlines on Ars Technica, you see that HD DVD’s death is very likely, but it hasn’t quite snuffed it yet.  Going from the lack of a definite answer from Toshiba, they look at several possibilities that Toshiba could use to keep HD DVD on life support until around 2010, which seems a good guess as to how long it will take DVDs to start going the way of 8-tracks.

The Inquirer has already pulled the plug on HD DVD, and offers a few suggestions on how Toshiba can attempt to save face, and a bit of money.  This won’t be the last you hear of HD DVD, but it may be the last time you see one.

Today, Toshiba maintained its public face, which since Friday has emphasized that the company is considering its options. Speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson from Toshiba today said, “Toshiba has not made any announcement or decision. We are currently assessing our business strategies, but nothing has been decided at the moment.” Toshiba isn’t talking to many people on the record, but that’s okay, because we’ve got sources.”
