Components and Design

As we said before, the Thermalright True Black 120 CPU heatsink is essentially the same as the Ultra 120 eXtreme. The primary difference is the black Nickel electroplate finish and the inclusion of Thermalright’s new Chill Factor 2 thermal paste and an extra set of fan wires, which allow mounting two 120mm fans in a push-pull configuration.

The True Black 120 CPU cooler features a solid copper base, six U-shaped heat pipes and a large aluminum fin array. Although there are physically just six heat pipes, the U-shape configuration results in six evaporator sections (where the heat pipes contact the base and absorb heat from the CPU) and twelve condenser sections (where heat is dissipated into the aluminum fins). As we will see later, this results in a very efficient heat transfer arrangement!

The precision machined copper base of the True Black 120 cooler exhibits a smooth machined finish and appears to be flat. The entire assembly is black Nickel electroplated and exhibits excellent build quality and finish; just what we have come to expect from Thermalright! The black finish gives this cooler a very attractive new look.

The Thermalright True Black 120 uses the same universal mounting hardware kit as the Ultra 120 eXtreme. It supports both Intel LGA775 and AMD processor platforms and features a sturdy bolt-thru design instead of relying on wimpy push-pins or retention frame lugs. Much better IMHO for larger cooler designs.
As with all Thermalright heatsinks, no cooling fans are provided with the True Black 120. The choice of size, quantity and speed are left up to the end user.
