The final day of Quakecon was a sight to behold as gamers played throughout the night and got their fill of headshots, monster frags, tons of swag, and some even made a few new friends along the way. The first event on the main stage was our PC Perspective Hardware Workshop where Ryan and most of our staff held a overclocking exhibition with AMD, DirectX 11 preview, Quakecon 2009 case mod contest finalists, and NVIDIA’s 3D Vision demonstration.

Day 2 summary

The second day of Quakecon 2009 featured a variety of gaming events ranging from product line presentations by Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel to the first public demonstration of Splash Damage’s upcoming FPS called Brink. There was also the Crucial dodgeball tourney, BAWLS chugging competition, and NVIDIA’s search for the “Superheroes of Quakecon”.

Todd Howard from Bethesda Game Studios also gave Quakecon attendees an indepth look at what happens behind the scenes into the game-making process at Bethesda. Many PC gamers have played popular titles from Bethesda like The Elder Scrolls series and the 2008 Game of the Year Fallout 3.

Tom Mustaine from Escalation Studios provided some background into the development of DOOM Resurrection for the iPhone and the night finished up with the Master Pancake Theater, which has been a tradition at Quakecon for almost 10 years. The theater presented their own version of a night at the movies, but did it “Quakecon” style. Attendees were also allowed to show off their musical talents during QuakeJam on one of the main stages in the exhibit hall.

The second item of interest was the first public viewing of Rage,  an upcoming first-person shooter and racing video game in development by id Software. It will use the company’s new id Tech 5 engine and looked amazing during the demostration too. There were several other key events like NVIDIA’s product demonstration, Fatal1ty’s game challenge, and the Quake Live finals to conclude the event. Don’t forget the 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang Coupe giveaway either.

Fatal1ty also gave away tons of prizes and even hooked up these four kids with some Fatal1ty headsets, power supplies, and t-shirts. During the presentation, Creative and OCZ also performed a dialog skit explaining the importance of sound in gaming.

Kingston sponsored a Guitar Hero competition pinning Quakecon attendees against pro gamer Annie “Ecstacy” Leung. Ecstacy is the highest ranked female Guitar Hero player in the nation and she recently took first place at the World Cyber Games Pacific regional finals this year.

Gamers competed in the Quake Live open tournament on Alienware systems, including their new keyboard and mouse line that’s not currently available to the public. The tournament was open to all types of gamers with varying levels of experience, which was awesome to watch and see how good these “amateurs” really were.

Quakeon visitors and attendees also got to try out a demo of Bethesda Softworks upcoming title called Wet, a highly-stylized third person shooter that blends gun play, sword kills, and over-the-top aerial acrobatics to create the ultimate action experience.

Hundreds of gamers visited the Quake Live booth to take a look at this free arena shooter created by id Software. Quake Live sports over 40 arenas and five game modes making this free title an exceptional FPS.

The Alienware/SteelSeries booth had an awesome display that allowed gamers to try out Alienware’s M17x notebooks using Left 4 Dead and they also were able to hear the crisp sounds of SteelSerie’s latest 5H pro headsets.

This Quakecon gamer tries to eat a “Stinky Twinkie”, but comes up short after the meal turns his stomach. Gamers were given opportunities like this throughout the event the earn some great prizes and even one of 100 tickets for an exclusive raffle to win a 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Coupe.

 

World-class overclockers attempt to break overclocking record for AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor

Overclocker Vince “K|ngp|n” Lucido fills his thermus with LN2 during one of their attempts at breaking the world overclocking record for AMD’s Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor.

Overclocker Sami Makinen Macci tweaks a few settings in the BIOS while K|ngp|in prepares to add more LN2 to their overclocking rig. K|ngp|n and AMD’s Makinen reached a record 7.088GHz by overclocking the AMD Phenom II X4 965 on Dragon technology. Also, in front of a live audience, they achieved the third highest 3DMark06 score ever recorded and ran the benchmark at a quad-core record of 6.6GHz.
