3DMark Vantage
The important scores to look at here are the GPU tests specifically as the overall 3DMark result takes into consideration the CPU scores as well. In this synthetic test it is appears that the Radeon HD 5870 is definitely a step above the GTX 285 but falls short of the GTX 295 by 13% or so at the Extreme preset.
These results definitely show off some of the work that AMD has put into the new Evergreen line of GPUs. Take a look at the complex pixel shader results: the HD 5870 is 110% faster than the HD 4890 meaning that not only did AMD double the shader count but they are indeed more efficient as well. It is 38% faster than the GTX 285 but still falls just short of the dual-GPU GTX 295. That shading power increase does give the card a nice boost in applications like the GPU-based cloth test and particle simulation.
The texture units are also making a big difference here as well – the HD 5870 dominates any other competitor in this regard and comes in exactly 2x the performance of the HD 4890. The new GPU can push 50% more textures than even the GTX 295!
Our results using a pair of HD 5870s in CrossFire show very good scaling across the board with the exceptions of the GPU-based cloth and particle tests.
