HDTach 3.0.4.0

HDTach v3.0.4.0

HD Tach will test the sequential read, random access and interface burst speeds of your attached storage device (hard drive, flash drive, removable drive, etc). All drive technologies such as SCSI, IDE/ATA, 1394, USB, SATA and RAID are supported. Test results from HD Tach can be used to confirm manufacturer specs, analyze your system for proper performance, and compare your performance with others. HD Tach is very easy to use, quick, and presents data in easy to read graphs, including the ability to compare two storage devices on screen at the same time for easy analysis.

With only half the channels available, the single 40GB drive managed to hang in there.  HDTach showed off a side effect of the new Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver.  A small amount of driver-level caching fools the burst speed test into reporting an abnormally high value in our RAID test.

Read speeds were reasonable at 178 MB/sec.  That figure gives us a glimpse into how a 10-channel unit would perform if equipped with a SATA 6Gb/sec interface, as it would likely hit the same 357 MB/sec figure seen with a pair of 5-channel units operating without saturating the SATA 3Gb/sec bus.

Access times are moot with these units.  It’s interesting how the 40GB model posts at 0.1 even though it is equipped with the same parts as the G2.  More on that on our new and improved second page of the IOMeter testing.
