Introduction
Asus aims between the eyes with a deadly combination of design, performance, and price. But is it enough to put it in the G51J gaming notebook on your shopping list in the crowded marketplace?
Over the past few years Asus has made some serious inroads in the mobile market with a wide variety of products that target various lifestyles. What is even more impressive is how Asus so quickly entered the market crowded by entrenched players, and came up on top in a 3-year reliability survey published in 2009 (read the story here on Engadget). But in the tech industry, each new product is a new beginning regardless of how reputable or impressive a company’s product offering may be. With that in mind we will be looking at the latest gaming notebook offered by Asus – the G51J.
The Asus G51J is a 15.4″ notebook outfitted with an Intel i7-720QM CPU and an NVIDIA GTX 260M GPU. While not the fastest parts currently available, does the sum of all parts (and design) give Asus a product worth looking at in an increasingly competitive mobile gaming market?
Let’s dive into a very detailed look at the G51J.

The Asus G50VT, which is the predecessor to the G51J is superior in my opinion. It has a sexy red trim and that small OLED screen behind the keyboard. It can actually have more single core x86 performance than the G51J thanks to the X9100 Extreme processor, which you can overclock to 3.45, maybe 3.6GHZ 100% stable at full load.
The Forcecon fan is easily replaceable with a few screws, versus the G51J where I’ve heard you have to replace the whole heatsink to replace the fan.
