Heat
Gaming laptops are traditionally as the added power consumption of the GPU generates more heat. We examine the Asus G51J while it is playing games and doing intensive computations.

Under load, the exhaust reads an astonishing 66C / 150F which causes the top left side pretty hot to the touch – not enough to burn, but hot enough to not be pretty comfortable. This brings up an interesting usability issue: if you mouse on the left (i.e. you’re left-handed) the G51J is essentially unsable unless you like having your hand cooked. Also I’m pretty sure people sitting next to the G51J wouldn’t appreciate the hot air either. This is pretty poor design on Asus’ part which could have been easily avoided by exhausting the air out the rear instead.

The fan noise is never unbearable on the G51J. When idle you barely notice it running, but when running 100% it sounds like a gentle rush of air moving – no annoying vibrations or pitched squeals. Noise is not a problem with the G51J.

Given that the heat is isolated to the left side of the laptop and doesn’t bleed into other areas of the body, I would say that the thermal design is pretty effective. The keyboard gets a little warmer under load, but still very usable.
