Performance Test Setup
To test the performance of the Asus G51J, we take a sampling of recent Intel Core i5 and i7 systems from both the mobile and desktop realms.
- Asus G51J – a quad-core mobile CPU with hyperthreading should provide decent performance – a bit better than the Core i5 540M in the Asus K42F.
- Asus K42F – is an affordable system using an integrated GPU on the CPU die. There are two cores and no hyperthreading support. [Review]
- Intel i7 Extreme 920XM – a high-performance mobile system capable of fast computations and superb gaming. CPU has 4 cores with hyperthreading support. [Review]
- Core i5 desktop system – a budget desktop based on Intel Clarkdale CPU with on-die graphics. [Review]
- Core i7 desktop system – a mid-range desktop system based on the popular Intel Lynnfield CPU. [Review]

The Asus G50VT, which is the predecessor to the G51J is superior in my opinion. It has a sexy red trim and that small OLED screen behind the keyboard. It can actually have more single core x86 performance than the G51J thanks to the X9100 Extreme processor, which you can overclock to 3.45, maybe 3.6GHZ 100% stable at full load.
The Forcecon fan is easily replaceable with a few screws, versus the G51J where I’ve heard you have to replace the whole heatsink to replace the fan.
