Performance – 3DMark Vantage
3DMark is a useful tool to compare graphics performance against other systems in a normalized manner.
In the following tests, we have different classes of GPUs being tested – so this is not a straight-forward apples-to-apples scenario. The NVIDIA GTX 260M will score lower because it’s mid-high GPU, whereas the other GPUs are rated higher.

- Asus G51J: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1GB (mobile)
- Core i7-Extreme 920XM: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M 1GB (mobile)
- Core i5-661 desktop: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 1GB
- Core i7-750 desktop: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 1GB
The results aren’t too surprising here – the G51J is expected to score lower against the faster GPUs in the other systems. However how does this translate in real game performance? Let’s now take a look at The Saboteur, Dragon Age, Left 4 Dead 2, and DiRT2.

The Asus G50VT, which is the
The Asus G50VT, which is the predecessor to the G51J is superior in my opinion. It has a sexy red trim and that small OLED screen behind the keyboard. It can actually have more single core x86 performance than the G51J thanks to the X9100 Extreme processor, which you can overclock to 3.45, maybe 3.6GHZ 100% stable at full load.
The Forcecon fan is easily replaceable with a few screws, versus the G51J where I’ve heard you have to replace the whole heatsink to replace the fan.
