Video Quality
The screen on the Asus G51J is very bright and vivid thanks to full HD resolution (1920×1080) and LED backlight. Without any of the Asus enhancements enabled, the display is sharp and easy on the eyes.
At a typical viewing angle, colours were consistent from edge to edge without any noticeable dark or bright regions.

Viewing from extreme angles from the left and right is very good with some variation in colour, but still acceptable.

We ran the display through its paces by viewing a variety of images and movies.

For still images, the picture quality is sharp with very little light bleeding to adjacent pixels. However, I found that the default colour saturation a bit conservative, so I suggest adjusting this using the Nvidia display driver or the Asus Splendid utility (more on Splendid later). Contrast and shadow detail is very deep out of the box.

HD videos look absolutely amazing on the 15.4” screen. The colours are bright and the details are sharp, and thanks to Nvidia’s hardware acceleration, everything looked smooth too. I didn’t notice the saturation issue as I did with still images – perhaps the moving image on screen makes the issue less apparent (or maybe I’m more critical with stills?).

I know judging displays is a bit subjective, but you have to trust me when I say that the G51J display won’t let you down. As if that weren’t enough, the G51J gives you a peace of mind thanks to a 30 day zero bright dot global warranty if purchased in Canada and the USA (warranty may vary elsewhere). You can feel confident that the manufacturer will look after you after you’ve made your purchase.

Asus also provides the Splendid colour utility that allows you to quickly change the colour values and gamma. Splendid has 4 presets (Normal, Vivid, Theater, Custom) which can also be cycled through by pressing the Fn+C hotkey. I found this tool interesting, but I found switching profiles a burden – it’s easier just to stick to a single profile you like than having to switch (or adjust your driver colour curve and be done with it).
