Audio Quality
Audio quality is often the Achilles heel of laptops and it boils down to a simple fact of acoustics: to produce big, full sound, you need a large, powerful speaker. Because laptops are small and the power profile needs to be conservative , the speakers are small and have a low watt rating – audio quality usually ends up muddy and metallic when compared to even the worst desktop speakers.(Aside: However, all of this has changed with the Asus N90Jq which uses Bang + Olufsen loud speakers mounted on the sides of the display).
With this sobering prelude, how does the Asus G51J fare?
By playing through some lossless music tracks and some movies, it’s fair to say that the G51J is your typical laptop audio: emphasis is on treble with bass nearly non-existant, and the middle range is muddy lacking any definition. Action movies sound pretty harsh especially with explosions and breaking glass. Music is acceptable, but with the lack of any bass, it’s hard to really enjoy it.

In gaming, the audio is acceptable since audio comes in short bites of action. However in games with an intense soundtrack (like DiRT 2 which we test later) you’ll find yourself wanting to turn the music off instead and the music gets a bit grating.
The volume on the G51J is underpowered. With the volume cranked to its maximum, the system is barely what I would consider loud. This makes it difficult to use the G51J in a presentation situation, or doing voice chat over the ‘net if there’s moderate amount of competing background noise.

Even though the Asus G51J comes with Creative’s EAX 4.0, its capabilities are lost on the poor speakers. While the CMSS-3D does help give a more enveloping sound, the other enhancements are hamstrung. You can make the audio marginally better by setting the Bass Boost to 9dB with a frequency cut-off at 110Hz in the Creative Audio Center software.

The Asus G50VT, which is the predecessor to the G51J is superior in my opinion. It has a sexy red trim and that small OLED screen behind the keyboard. It can actually have more single core x86 performance than the G51J thanks to the X9100 Extreme processor, which you can overclock to 3.45, maybe 3.6GHZ 100% stable at full load.
The Forcecon fan is easily replaceable with a few screws, versus the G51J where I’ve heard you have to replace the whole heatsink to replace the fan.
