HD Tach will test the sequential read, random access and interface burst speeds of your attached storage device (hard drive, flash drive, removable drive, etc). All drive technologies such as SCSI, IDE/ATA, 1394, USB, SATA and RAID are supported. Test results from HD Tach can be used to confirm manufacturer specs, analyze your system for proper performance, and compare your performance with others. HD Tach is very easy to use, quick, and presents data in easy to read graphs, including the ability to compare two storage devices on screen at the same time for easy analysis.

The caching Marvell driver completely throws off our burst results.  If you read between the lines, you’ll note the non-caching Marvell is not bursting as high as it should be.  327 is quite low as compared to the expected ~480 MB/sec for this test.

Here the new Caviar Black was doing just fine, until the Marvell controller threw a wrench into its write speeds.  We’re used to writes matching reads for spinning disks, but something with Marvell’s controller design or drivers is causing some issues here.

Access times look good, though the 1TB model falls slightly behind the 2TB beasts.
