Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

FA is a DX9 based game, which also happens to be the engine powering the recently released Supreme Commander 2.  This takes advantage of multi-core systems, and the lighting and water effects still look top notch after all this time.  The built-in demo/benchmark is used with High Quality settings, medium shadows, 4X AA and 16X AF.

The R5770 stays within a few frames of the HD 4870 throughout testing.  This DX9 app obviously does not take advantage of the redesigned stream units on the R5770 which is required for DX11.  As such the difference in memory bandwidth gives the HD 4870 the edge on this older test.

Fallout 3

This is another DX9 based program, but it pushes the polygons and effects a bit more than Bethesda’s previous game, Oblivion.  A manual runthrough is captured with FRAPS just outside of the bunker.  Ultra settings are enabled with 4X AA and 16X AF.

The R5770 is again competing well against the HD 4870, and once the resolution hits 2560 x 1600 the R5770 takes a big lead in performance.  This quite likely is related to how much memory this card has as compared to the older HD 4870 512 MB.

DiRT 2

One of the first native DX11 games out there still looks quite stunning even in DX10/DX9 mode.  The internal benchmark was used, with settings put at High under presets.  4X AA and 16X AF are enabled.

The R5770 is again just behind the HD 4870 at all resolutions.  At 2560 x 1600 the R5770 is again just behind the HD 4870, but the minimum frame rate is slightly better.  By putting AA quality down to 2X on the HD 5770 it was able to achieve fairly smooth framerates.
