Product Design
Out of the box, the Asus U30Jc is an attractive notebook that will look good in just about any setting. The cover is made of aluminum and has a subtle purple hue that makes it unique amoung most portable computers on the market these days (i.e. it’s not glossy black). It has a slim profile dressed in flowing curves and a silver coloured straight edge trim that accentuates the overall design.

Opening up the U30Jc, you will find the metallic motif continuing with an aluminum wrist rest, and metal looking trackpad and bezel surrounding the keyboard. The whole appearance is very tight and well thought out.

The keys themselves are soft to press with a very timid click when depressed. The feeling is very similar to recent model MacBook Pros.

The trackpad looks like its made from aluminum as well, and the resulting movement is very smooth and feels a lot nicer than your typical surface. The buttons only require a small amount of force to depress which makes dragging actions easy to do.

On the right, you will find that the cabling can get a bit cramped when the power adapter is plugged in. Ejecting the DVD tray would often snag a cable on its way out.

Right side: DVD ROM drive, USB port, Gigabit LAN, and power port.

Left side: Audio ports, 2x USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3a output, VGA output, exhaust vent, and lock port.

The left side is also fairly crammed – making space for the VGA connector and the exhaust vent.

The front edge hides a WiFi on-off switch, and a SD card reader. The bezel looks like it is perforated for ventilation, but the holes are actually for the Altec Lansing speakers.

Flipping over the U30 to take a look at its underside, we find two panels for two RAM DIMMs and the SATA hard drive. It’s worth noting that there isn’t a mini PCI-express slot that the user can access for upgrades.

Overall the design is visually appealing and good attention was given to the touch surfaces. However, you may find the connections a bit cramped.
